Ft Walton 2022 Race 4 Gate
Leeward Mark and Gate • 3m 33s
In this video I explain the tactical considerations we face as we round the starboard gate with a gaggle of Flying Scots rounding just in front of us. The end-game is to execute a good tactical rounding so we can finish higher on the ladder than the boats ahead and hopefully in better air. After we round the gate we will be on starboard tack, so if we can do a better job some may have to duck us when they tack back over to the right.
We enter the zone clear ahead of other boats so we have the tactical freedom to make a move. Boat #6080 has a little trouble with the spinnaker and leaves a nice opening for us. We set ourselves up nicely to take advantage of this opportunity we did, passing two boats at the gate. We also ended up a half boat length higher up the ladder than any boat in front of us so we were sailing in pretty good air compared to others.
I rewind the video so viewers can rewatch the rounding with raw audio and without voiceovers and listen to the communication between skipper and crew during the douse and rounding.
